ABSTRACT
This study to asses challenges in mitigating Female Genital Mutilation was
conducted in Singida Rural District, in the four selected villages namely; Ilongero,
Mrama, Puma and Ikungi. Data were collected using questionnaires, Focus Group
Discussion and interviews. A total of 90 respondents were involved in the study. The
information obtained was then analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social
Scientists (SPSS) and qualitative information was analyzed using content analysis.
Findings from this study revealed that all respondents were aware of FGM and
86.2% perceived FGM as decreasing. Other findings revealed that there are several
strategies and programme in place to mitigate FGM. The strategies include provision
of education, legal action against FGM practitioners, and provision of human rights
education and involvement of men in provision of information.
The study concludes that NGO‟s, police intervention and health center play a great
role in mitigating FGM in the study area through provision of education on the effect
of FGM and taking legal action against FGM practitioners even though there is a
great challenge from cultural and traditional inheritance. Therefore, it is
recommended that there should be community sensitization and mobilization on
FGM in a sustainable manner through provision of education on the effects of FGM.
