ABSTRACT


This study was designed to examine the “The Impact of Truancy on the Performance of Secondary School Students in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State”. A survey research design was adopted for the study. One hundred and eighty (180) respondents were randomly selected from ten selected secondary schools in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State. The main instrument used for this study was questionnaire and the data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentage. The findings from the study revealed that lack of school materials to work with made students run away from school, parents carelessly and by intention encourage truancy of the students, truancy affects the development of human resources needed for social and economic transformation of the society. It was therefore recommended that parents should be mandated by school authorities to provide their children with basic school needs, as this will reduce unnecessary outings among students, students who perform poorly in examination and test should face firm punishment or sanctions duly supervised by the class teacher so that subsequent test and examination they will work harder and government should help the police department to establish and run temporary detention cenres where they can drop off truant students for correction purposes.
