Community Participation and Teacher Motivation in Primary Schools in Minakulu Sub County, Oyam District, Uganda

ABSTRACT This thesis is entitled “Community participation and Teacher motivation in selected primary schools. It is presented as a result of a research that was carried out in selected primary schools in Minakulu Sub County, Oyam district. The study was carried out basing on three specific objectives, i.e.; to determine the level of community participation in primary schools Minakulu Sub County in Oyam District in Northern Uganda, to establish the level of teacher motivation in primary schools in Minakulu Sub County, Oyam District in Northern Uganda and to establish the relationship between community participation and teacher motivation in primary schools in Minakulu Sub County, Oyam district. The study is a descriptive correlation design. The study population constituted of three types of respondents, the school administrators, teachers, from selected Primary schools in Minakulu Sub County, Qyam District in Northern Uganda. A study sample of 63 respondents was chosen, using Purposive sampling method. Questionnaires and interviews were used in collecting both primary and secondary data. The collected data was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings showed that there was a generally an agreement that there were various aspects of community participation that lead to the motivation of teachers. In addition, the study found out that there is a strong correlation between strong financial management systems and accountability. The researcher concluded that a strong participatory spirit among local community citizenry leads to the motivation of teachers. He recommends the establishment of tools to develop community participation, establishment of participatory training programmes and fundamental changes in administrative tools so as to enhance community participation for better teacher motivation.
