The various school of thoughts in manipulation presented different aproach in tackling manipulation. cyriax, maitland, kaltenburn presented their aproach. Kaltenborn translatoric movement; this are passive accessory movements that are divided into TRACTION ( separation) occurring perpendicular to the joint surface and GLIDING (parallel movement) which takes place parallel to the joint surface. Translatoric movement are used in both movement and treatment ( kaltenborn,1986. Cyriax contribution in devising a logical method for clinical examination of soft tissue structures’’ or musculoskeletal problem has been a component of many of the other evaluative frameworks in manual therapy. Common elements in these three approaches includes gathering of patient data through taking of history; active movement testing; palpation; mobilization; manipulation and patient education as treatment interventions. Goeffery Maitland is an Australian  PT, who focused on segmental approach to assessment and treatment of the spine. He focuses on eliciting and treating signs and symptoms rather than specific diagnoses. The changes in the patients signs and symptoms guides the PT in selecting treatment approaches. Maitland utilizes graded passive movements performed in an oscillatory manner for assessment and treatment. His subjective examination is both detailed and specific and his objective examination on joints that lie beneath the painful area, joints that refer pain to the painful area, and muscle beneath the painful area.
