ABSTRACT

This study investigated the comprehension problems of the S.H.S two (2) students of Parkoso Senior High School. The purpose of the study was to find out the reading ability of Parkoso SHS two (2) students, identify the reading skills that the students know, identify how students derive meaning from comprehension passages and determine the problems affecting Parkoso S.H.S two (2) students in comprehending comprehension texts. This research is a qualitative study that analyzed comprehension problems of S.H.S two (2) students of Parkoso Senior High School. A questionnaire and a sample comprehension passage were the instruments used. The sample size used was twenty (20) and they were S.H.S two (2) students. Ten (10) of the students sampled were from the Home Economics class and the other ten (10) students sampled were from the Visual Arts class. Analysis of the data collated from the study revealed that; students’ poor reading habits, lack of vocabulary, poor knowledge of reading skills, poor knowledge of punctuation marks, teachers unimproved teaching methods and strategies as well as students’ inability to derive meaning from comprehension passages have greatly contributed to the students’ comprehension problems. It has been suggested that students read extensively to increase their vocabulary and employ appropriate reading skills to help them derive meaning from comprehension passages.
