ABSTRACT

This project work is focused on the design and construction of obstacle detection system for the visually impaired. This paper reports on a study that helps visually-impaired people to walk more confidently. The study hypothesizes that a smart walking stick that alerts visually-impaired people over obstacles in front could help them in walking with less accident. The aim of the paper is to address the development work of a walking stick that could communicate with the users through sound alert. The main component of this system is the ultrasonic sensor which is used to scan a

predetermined area around the visually person by emitting-reflecting waves. The reflected signals received from the barrier objects are used as inputs to an ultrasound receiver unit. The ultrasound receiver intercepts the reflected signal and then communicate the status of a given appliance or device back to the ears of the visually impaired using a buzzer. The proposed system is cheap, fast, and easy to use and an innovative affordable solution to blind and visually impaired people in third world countries.
