Effect of Fiber Optic Technology on the Telecommunication Sector Development in Uganda Case Study of Mtn Uganda Limited

ABSTRACT The study was carried out in central Uganda on the effect of Fibre Optic Technology in the telecommunication sector of Uganda and the focus of the study was MTN Corporation as one of the Telecommunication Service Providers. The study used a lot of methods to make the whole research process effective. It employed both exploratory and descriptive research designs to draw explanations as to why Fibre Optic Technology was being adopted in Uganda. Data was collected from both primary and secondary sources to make the findings comprehensive and generalisable in drawing conclusions. The study population included the technical staff from the communication companies, the users of telecommunication services especially those in the department of ICT and computer studies in selected universities. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews and documentary analysis. The sample was selected using purposive sampling and data was analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively to present the data in statistical tables. The study found out that which was being opted in preference to other signal transmission technologies; it was facing a lot of challenges which included destruction of Fibres during construction, vi high installation costs, poor relief and the risk of theft. The challenges were being solved through digging deeper, installing fiber on high ways, demarcating fiber optic pathways and adopting Optic Fibre policies. The study recommended that the use of Fibre optic Technology has led to Efficiency, Effectiveness and Customer Satisfaction that has improved Telecommunication sector in Uganda.
