Environmental
degradation is a serious problem facing Nigeria’s environment. Until recently
the major known causes of environmental pollution in the country include gas
flaring, oil spillage, activities of artisanal miners, unsustainable
exploitation of biological resources by the populace such as illegal logging,
using of chemicals and explosives for fishing, emission of industrial effluents,
poor waste management systems among others which are responsible for climate
change, leading to global warming, loss of carbon sinks, acidifications,
desertification, diseases etc.

It
has recently been discovered that unregulated cattle grazing and its movements
on foot causes environmental pollution in Nigeria’s environment. This adverse
environmental impacts include soil erosion, reduction of vegetative cover,
destruction of lower animals, pollution of water-courses, changing of aesthetic
look of the environments etc. In addition the activities of the herdsmen in the
recent times are also responsible for food insecurity being experienced in the
country due to their protracted attacks on the farmers which had made a good
number of the farmers to abandon farming in search of an alternative source of
livelihood in the country.

The
study aims at analyzing the environmental impacts of cattle grazing in Nigeria.
Further, it will also examine regulatory frameworks and policies enacted by the
governments in addressing environmental pollution in the country. The study
will as a matter of fact, proffer some valuable recommendations in handling
environmental pollution resulting from cattle grazing in Nigeria and possible
ways of resolving the constant clashes between the herdsmen and farmers.
