Microbiological Analyses of Freshly Laid and Stored Domestic Poultry Eggs in Selected Poultry Farms in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria

Freshly laid and stored domestic fowl eggs of 7, 14 and 21 days old, respectively were microbiologically analysed for organisms on their shells in the chalazae, albumen and yolks. All the egg parts were analysed by plating on Nutrient, McConkey and Sabourand’s Dextrose media respectively.

Antimicrobial screening , nutrients profile and Pyhtochemical analysis of the leaf extracts of Tetrapluera tetraptera

ABSTRACT Phytochemical and Antimicrobial activity of the leaves of Tetrapluera tetraptera using aqueous and ethanolic extract was studied. The leave was observed to be highly rich in polyphenols, flavonoid, reducing compounds and alkaloids. Glycosides, saponins and tanins were present in small amount, there was absence of Phlobotanins, anthraquinones and hydroxyl methyl anthraquinones. In order to confirm the exact concentration of the Phytochemicals present in the leave of T. tetraptera, a ...

Antibacterial activity of leaf extract of phyllantgus amarus agaice salmonella species coursitive agent of typhoid fever

ABSTRACT The study was conducted to assess the antibacterial activity of Phyllanthus amarus (Schum and Thonn) extract against Salmonella typhi causative agent of typhoid fever at the laboratories of the Departments of Chemistry and Theoretical and Applied Biology of the College of Science, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. The objectives were to determine the highest yield of crude extract of P. amarus using different proportions of water to ethanol and to determine ...

Microbiological Evaluation of Bacteria Species Isolated from Zobo and Kunnu Sold in Olabisi Onabanjo University

ABSTRACT Zobo and Kunu drinks are non-alcoholic beverage that is widely produced and consumed in Nigeria. The beverage may possess health risk when contaminated due to method of preparation. Zobo and Kunu drinks were purchased from different sellers in Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye Ogun State. Physical and chemical analysis of the drinks were carried out, involving pour plate were also employed to isolate bacteria from these drinks. The microbial qualities were determined using pour p...

The antibacterial effect of the leaf extract of buchhozia coriacea

Abstract: This study was aimed at determining the antibacterial effect of the leaf extract of Buchholzia coriacea (Wonderful Kola) on nasal isolates. Nasal isolates were collected from one hundred students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwash-uku, Delta State. The antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of the leaves was assessed against nasal isolated microorganisms (E.coli, Citrobacter species, Klebsiella species, and Proteus species) using the agar well diffusion method. Inh...

Pathophysiology of Ebola virus

ABSTRACT  Ebola virus, a member of the Filoviridae virus family, is still an untamed, highly lethal viral pathogen that represents a nightmare for much of central Africa, which is the site of the majority of EBOV outbreaks (Geisbert et al.2010). Unfortunately there has not been a large push in the search for a vaccine as this virus, as deadly as it is, has not impacted a large portion of the world’s population with only 2,300 reported cases of hemmorraghic fever caused by filoviruses. On a...

Effects of Palm Oil Processing Waste on Soil

ABSTRACT The microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of soil receiving palm oil processing waste (POPW) in Abraka were investigated. The effect of palm oil processing waste was tested on loamy, sandy and clay soils. The pour plate technique was used for the isolation of the organisms. The total mean bacterial count ranged from 0.91±0.03log10CFU/g to 6.13±0.06log10CFU/g for loamy soil, 0.90±0.02log10CFU/g to 6.09±0.02log10CFU/g for sandy and 0.72±0.04 to 6.0±0.02log10CFU/g fo...

Carriage of β-Lactamase and Antibiotics Resistance Plasmids by Strains of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated from Hospital Patients in Ekpoma

ABSTRACT A total of 100 subjects were screened for  S. aureus strains, thirty (30) S. aureus isolates were obatained. The carriage of β-lactamase among the 30 isolates was determined by using starch iodine agar plate method. It was found that 19(63.3%) of the S. aureus strains were β-lactamase producing. Plasmid curing of the β-lactamase producing isolates was done using acredine orange supplimented nutrient agar to determine if their β-lactamase producing capability was plasmid mediated...

STUDIES ON THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF CASTOR OIL SEED ON SOME SELECTED BACTERIA

ABSTRACT  The castor plant is a robust perennial shrub of Euphorbiacaea family.  The seeds are documented to have an antibacterial profile against some bacterial organisms  such as  Escherichia  coli,  Staphylococcus  aureus,  Pseudomonas aeruginosa,    Klebsiella  pneumoniae,  Proteus  vulgaris,  and  Streptococcus pyogenes.  This  study  was  carried  out  to  ascertain  antimicrobial  properties inherent  in  the  extracts  (aqueous,  methanolic  and  n-hexa...

Antimicrobial Effect of Natural Honey and Mango Leave on Pathogenic Bacteria

ABSTRACT  Honey has since been found to possess antibacterial property and is therefore employed for wound and gastro-intestinal disease therapy. This study evaluates the antibacterial spectrum and efficacy of honey and compared with tetracycline.  Different concentrations (50, 75 and 100.0 %) of honey were studied in-vitro using Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp, Escherichia coli and Citrobacter spp. The data obtained showed the inhibitory action of honey with clear zones of inhibition...

Comparative Evaluation of Bacteria and Fungi Diseases Associated with Saccharum officinarum (Sugarcane) in Ethnobotanical Garden of Wesley University, Ondo

ABSTRACT The comparative evaluation of the bacterial and fungal diseases associated with Saccharum officinarum (Sugarcane) in ethnobotanical garden of Wesley University, Ondo was carried out through different microbial processes. The objectives of this work were to comparatively evaluate bacterial and fungal diseases associated with sugarcane in rainy and dry seasons, isolation and identification of bacterial and fungal diseases associated with sugarcane and development of disease inventory a...

A pilot biomonitoring study of bladder tumor antigen (BTA) in aflatoxin exposed Nigerian villagers

AbstractObjective: To correlate the levels of bladder tumour antigen (BTA) with aflatoxin M1 (AFM) in a humanpopulation in Nigeria.Subjects and methods: A pilot, observational study was conducted with 22 human subjects randomlyrecruited from a Nigerian rural community. Serum and first morning urine of participants were analysedfor human BTA and AFM1, respectively, using quantitative ELISA assays. Results: All the subjects were positive to AFM1 (mean= 0.235± 0.072 ng/mL) while 19 were positi...
