ABSTRACT
This study examines issues that border on the marriage institution and gender complementarity in the African/Nigerian society. The genders, more especially the female gender have all of a sudden become uncomfortable with their natural roles in matrimony as they now prefer the roles of their male counterpart. This has resulted to domestic upheaval which has spread to the African/Nigerian society as such, has hampered even development in the Africa continent. This study however, takes a critical examination of this power tussle and proffers solution to this conflict by examining the advantage and positive results gender complementarity breeds in matrimony and the society at large. The study therefore, clearly explains the different but complementary roles of genders and advocates the importance of carrying out these roles efficiently. In chapter one, the power tussle is examined and the both genders are encouraged to accept their natural roles without grudges because, no gender is superior or inferior to the other but are equal, different and complementary. In chapter two, the critical works of scholars in Okoye’s Behind the Clouds and Adimora-Ezeigbo’s House of Symbols are reviewed. Chapter three covers the analysis of Behind the Clouds and chapter four, covers that of House of Symbols in relation to gender complementarity. Finally, chapter five concludes this research work as the intended message of this research is explicitly conveyed.
