ABSTRACT
The study set to assess the influence of human rights on prevalence rates of
prostitution in mbale municipality. The study was based on four research objectives
which included assessing the causes· of human rights abuse in the Ugandan context,
explore the role of human rights on prostitution prevalence in Uganda, establish
mechanisms for improving human rights observation and reduction of prostitution in
Uganda and to establish the relationship between human rights and prevalence of
prostitution in Uganda.
The study adopted a descriptive Survey research design based on both qualitative and
quantitative research designs. The study also adopted a population of 60 respondents
wl1o were selected for the population categories of mbale municipality.
The study findings were that the causes of human rights abuses in mbale municipality,
the study findings were that Low levels of education had 10% of the responses, Drug
abuse 18.3%, Poor policy interpretation 21.6%, Ineffective policies 10''l'o, limited
enforcement capacity had 11.7% of the respondents, High degree of poverty had 15%
of the respondents and Unemployment had 13.3% of the respondents.
It was also established that human rights account for prostitution prevalence in Uganda
through Freedom of association encourage prostitution according to 46.7% of the
respondents, liberty on alcohol consumption had 25% of the respondents, Prevalence of
many occasions had 20% of the respondents and High level of rights hence the sexual
behaviors had 8.3%.
Little has been done in reducing prostitution prevalence through improving human
rights observation, strengthen laws on prostitution, provision of alternative source of
income, Increase sensitization on dangers, Enhance traditional and religious
sensitization and Increase education for the people and 50% of the respondents agreed
that there is a positive relationship between human rights and prostitutioil prevalence
implying that prostitution prevalence is related to human rights in mbale municipality.
The researcher recommends that there is need for women and young people involved
in prostitution required a range of interventions to be available for them to access in
periods of crisis, interventions needed to address women's and young people's survival
needs and help them to stabilize as a pre requisite to exiting and there is need for !ocal
government sensitization on culture and how the concept plus government should
enhance guidance and counseling services of girls in schools
