KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE OF PRIMARY HEALTH NURSES TOWARDS SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE AMONG SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ILE IFE

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to examine the knowledge and attitude of primary school teachers 

on school health programme. Objectives were to assess knowledge of school teachers on 

school health programme, to determine the attitude of school teachers towards school health 

programme, to determine factors contributing to participation of school teachers in school 

health programme, to determine level of implementation of school health programme among 

primary school student in selected primary schools at Ife-central local government.

The study employed a descriptive design to describe the characteristics and also assess the 

knowledge and attitude of school health teachers. 130 school teachers participated in the 

study, which was selected through random sampling. Informed consent was obtained from 

the respondents without any coercion and confidentiality was assured and maintained. The 

data were collected using semi structured questionnaire which was analyzed using Statistical 

Package for social science (SPSS). 

The study found that 66.2% of the respondents had high level of knowledge about school 

health program while 33.8% had low level of knowledge. Majority (83.0%) displayed 

favorable attitude towards school health program. However, most (81.5%) of the teachers 

disagreed that school health program should not be included in the school's curriculum. Most 

(60.8%) of the teachers agreed that allocated time for teamwork and teachers collaboration 

contributes to their participation in school health program, while majority agreed they have 

school health program included in their school‘s curriculum. Finally the study found 

significant association between the knowledge and attitude of school teachers towards school 

health programme (P = 0.002
