Measurement of Pituitary Gland Dimension in Normal Sudanese Population using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract

The main objective of the study to determine normal pituitary gland

Dimension in Sudanese population. In addition to correlate the

findings with age and gender. The study examined 101 subjects aged

between 10-90 years in both gender (41 males and 60 Females) were

included in the study, all were diagnosed as normal brain MRI when

the measurement was done. Data were collected at Merowe Medical

City in North of Sudan from September 2019 to February 2020. A

reference image was obtained for the T1 arrow, length and width

measurements were taken for the pituitary gland. All measurements

were taken in millimeters. The relationship between the dimensions

of the pituitary gland with age and sex was studied. The study

concluded that there is an association between age and measurement

of the width of the pituitary gland and the no association between

age and measurement of the length of the pituitary gland. The study

concluded that the general measurement of the average width of the

pituitary gland increases with age. And that measuring the average

length of the pituitary gland increased at the age of 7-40 and 70-80

but decreased in middle age 40-70.And that the general

measurement of the average width and length of the pituitary gland

in females is more than that of males. The study recommended that

further study should be done with larger sample of population for

more accurate result, volumetric measurement may give more

information than dimension measurement.
