Mid-Point Assessment Of Goal One (Eradicate Extreme Poverty And Hunger) Of Millennium Development Goals In Nigeria: 2000-2007

ABSTRACT

This study is being carried to assess the mid-point (2000-2007)

achievement of goal one(eradicate extreme poverty and hunger) of Millennium

Development Goal in Nigeria. The research is guided by three Hypotheses which

are drawn from the Problem statements and objectives of the study. Related

literatures are reviewed in the study. The Data are sourced from both the Primary

and Secondary sources available. The questionnaire is the only source of primary

data collection. The questionnaire was drawn from the research objectives. Simple

statistical methods such as table and percentage are used to analyze data while

simple percentage is used to test the three Hypotheses formulated. The findings

indicated that the poverty rate of Nigeria before 2000 and afterwards have been

on the increase in spite of the current Millennium Development Goal whose goal

one is, to eradicate poverty and hunger before 2015. This study equally goes

further to discovering major obstacles militating against effective poverty

reduction such as: corruption, bad leadership, improper and inadequate planning,

non-involvement of the main beneficiaries(poor masses). Finally, some

recommendations and conclusion are made to ratify the problems identified.
