MORALITY AND AUDIENCE INFLUENCE IN NIGERIA HIPHOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF REMILEKUN SAFARU (REMINISCE)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to examine the role of popular music and language influence with reference to the Hiphop genre in propagating morals in our immediate society. When technology was non-existent and before the western ideology meets Africa, music has forever take significant stand in traditional folklore, festival, rituals and other important aspects of our cultural heritage. Over the years, the music of Africa has played more roles in social integration and development as it also seeks as a medium to continually retain ethics. The western tradition also shaped the approach to this art form as there emerge the rise of musical genres, social media and cutting edge instruments which enhanced production and distribution of music.

As this work seeks to establish an historical overview about the Nigeria Hiphop, it posits that some factors influencing the choice of language, fashion, style and other contents that are paraded in this musical form are influenced by audience demand in the 21st century. Also, it reveals how social media is playing an active role in music distribution. However, while the musical content may be motivated by its listener, this paper crusades that the artist should seek balance in making music that meets popular demand, cross cultural barriers and inculcate morals.
