ABSTRACT

This work was carried out to make comparison between the different school types as they influence the academic performance of students in Biology in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State. The work used data from the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) result in Biology for a period of three years (2010-2012), as well as questionnaires as instruments for the collection of research information.

The school types involved are some selected Secondary schools categorized into: boarding, day, public, private and single sexed schools. The study also used correlational design also known as expo-facto design to compare performance of students in Biology in the various school types. From the research findings, Biology teachers can identify and rectify the problems with the differences in students’ performance in Biology.

Hypotheses were also formulated and tested in relevance to the different school types and students’ academic performance in Biology. The statistical method used in analyzing data collected was based on Z-scores and percentage. From the findings of this research, it was recommended that the Government should ensure that adequate facilities and equipment in Biology laboratories are provided, and students should be encouraged to develop interest in the learning of Biology.
