Political and Moral Decay in the Drama of Emeka Nwabueze: A Reading of A Parliament of Vultures and Spokesman for the Oracle

Nigeria in few days from today will be fifty-five years existing as an independent entity. As a country, Nigeria has given birth to both military and civilian rule. In 1960, the British housewife in England called Nigeria our sovereign motherland in the national anthem given to us as a parting gift. The current anthem, put together by a committee of Nigeria intellectuals, invokes the father image. However, a critical examination of the happenings in the country reveals that Nigeria is a man-child, neither a father nor mother. Nigeria is gifted, enormously talented, prodigiously endowed yet incredibly wayward morally and politically. This essay is written against the backdrop of political amd moral decay in Nigeria as seen in the drama of Emeka Nwabueze.
