Reading and Comprehension Difficulties of Students of Brakwa Senior High Technical School

ABSTRACT

Reading comprehension is very important in every academic work. However, learners find it difficult to read and understand what they read. The research was carried out to investigate into reading and comprehension difficulties of students of Brakwa Senior High Technical School. The research site of this study was Brakwa Senior High Technical School. The data collection tools that were used were; Observation, Interview and Pre-test and Post-test interventions respectively. 35 students were selected for the study. The researcher used the qualitative research design. The researcher identified Aphasia and Dyslexia as the types of reading comprehension difficulties. The causes of reading and comprehension difficulties were identified from the observation and interview as vocabulary cause, phonological unawareness the use of wrong teaching method and unavailability of reading materials. Effects and ways to prevent reading and comprehension difficulty were also identified. Findings proved that students had vocabulary problem, fluency problem, and spelling and pronunciation problem. Teachers were able to identify these problems due to the teaching methods that they used. The researcher suggested that teachers need to use appropriate methods for teaching reading comprehension. Also, reading books must be available for the students to read.
