Repetition and Dropout Rates in Public Secondary Schools in Atiba Local Government area of Oyo State

Repetition and dropout is like a canker worm that has eaten deep into the fabric of our educational system. Over the years, educational planners, school administrators and educational agencies are concerned about how to reduce this state of educational system inefficiency. This research work determined repetition and dropout rates in public secondary schools in Atiba local government area. Descriptive research design was used and eight out of sixteen public secondary schools in the local government were selected as sample through simple random sampling technique. A data collection format was used to collect data on enrolment, repeaters and dropouts. Results of the study revealed 4.0%, 2.35% and 2.8% as average rates of repetition, dropout and dropout for girls respectively while wastage ratio stood at 1.06. The necessity of stimulating learning environment in schools to ensure and maintain low repetition, low dropout and improved academic performance was recommended. Better control of school attendance was also suggested.
