ABSTRACT
The study aimed at examining the reported incidence of motorcycle crash in Pentecost Hospital. To address the main objective, the study assessed the incidence of motorcycle crashes reported at the Pentecost Hospital, identify the causes of reported motorcycle crashes at the Pentecost Hospital and determine the effects associated with reported motorcycle crashes at the Pentecost Hospital. The study made use of a descriptive cross-sectional approach. Thus, motorcycle accident victims who report to the accidents and emergency unit of the Pentecost hospital between the month of January 2016 and April 2016 were used as subjects for the study. The statistical package for the social science (SPPS) Version 16 was used to process the data. Statistical tools of frequencies and percentages were used in the data analysis process. The results of the study revealed that the incidence of motorcycle injury was 60 per 286 (20.9%). Majority 32(53.3%) of the respondents own motorcycles because of transportation reasons. Most 25(41.7%) motorcycle accidents are motorcycle-motor vehicle collision. Most 37 (62.0%) of the motor victims are unable to report to work because of the injuries sustained. The greatest threats to the motorcyclist are hawkers 20 (33.3%). Likewise, most (30.0%) accidents occur as a result of driver error. Other reasons why accidents happen include bad overtaking (30.0%), over speeding (20.0%) by both the driver and motorcyclist, road defect (13.3%) as a result of potholes and no warning signal on the uneven nature of the road, using cell phone whiles riding (6.7%) and lastly hit and run (3.3%). The study recommended that the DVLA should put the necessary policies in place to make sure that before drivers get their license they are trained on how to use the road with motorcyclist.
