ABSTRACT
This study has focused on examining the role of International Organizations in
promoting access to primary education in Tanzania using World Food Programme in
Monduli-Arusha. The study has been undertaken in Monduli District, Arusha region.
The sample involved a total of 100 respondents who filled in the questionnaires. This
sample has been derived through the application of purposive and random sampling
methods. All of the aforementioned methods have been used to collect information
on the role of International organizations in promoting access to primary education in
Tanzania.
The SPSS software package has been used for data analysis and the findings have
revealed that the respondents benefit with WFP food aid in their communities. The
teachers involved in this study agreed to have WFP as an incentive to students’
attendance to schools. Students agreed to have been attracted to attend classes due to
food availability in schools. On the other hand, WFP officials still find that food aid
cannot only be a solution to students and community as a whole in valuing education.
WFP officials were still not satisfied with students’ general attendance to schools
despite being assured of food security while attending classes. It is, therefore
recommended that, since most pastoral communities fail to send their school-going
children to attend classes, the government should enact strong legislation to make
Maasai children, especially those benefiting with WFP food aid attendance to
schools mandatory. Therefore, School-feeding programme should go in line with the
education budget during every government fiscal year.
