Role of Traditional Institution in Nigeria Democratic Space: Contending Perspectives, Issues and Potentials

Abstract

The article examines the place of traditional institutions in Nigeria democratic space and electioneering process in Nigeria. The article contends on the role of the traditional institutions in today’s democracy emphasizing whether the institution is conform with the problem of relevance or constitutional recognition. Overtime, the role of traditional institutions has been influence during various phases of Nigeria history. The role of the traditional institution in the pre-colonial, colonial and post colonial period has reflected the current status and the struggle of constitutional role faced by the institution.  The  beginning of  modern  governmental

administration under the broad spectrum of Nigeria democratic space has seen the traditional institution suffered from the political conclusion making traditional institution roles limited to the preservation of customs and traditions while rejecting their constitutional role in partisan politics. In a view of election and electioneering process in the country, traditional ruler has

continued  to influence matters of politics and election in  Nigeria above their nominal and conservative role. The paper seeks to interrogate the contending perspectives as regards traditional  institutions.  The  study   examines  traditional  institution   role  in  election  and electioneering process in Nigeria. The study also put into consideration the issues and challenges affecting these institutions. The paper concludes by examining the potentials

contribution of traditional institution if well harnessed into Nigeria system of governance.
