ABSTRACT

The Industrial Court was reestablished in 2006 by the enactment of the Labour Disputes

(Arbitration and Settlement) Act No. 8 of 2006, with a great mandate in the settlement of labour

disputes in Uganda. However to date Ugandan workers and employers are yet to feel the impact

of this important institution.

Due to the above situation the researcher was encouraged to investigate the effectiveness of the

Industrial Court in the settlement of labour disputes in Uganda. The researcher used qualitative

methods of research by reviewing studies of various scholars, writings in journals and internet

sources that assisted in coming up with useful observations, conclusions and recommendations.

The study revealed that the Industrial Court was inaccessible, dependent on the availability

provided by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and remedies granted by

the Court are inadequate.

It's on the premise of the above findings that the researcher made recommendations that included

the amendment of the principal Act establishing the court and provision of adequate funding in

the short term to facilitate the court's operations, thereby improving its efficiency.
