The Effects of Boko Haram Insurgency on Human Security in Nigeria.

Abstract

The spate of violent attacks by the Boko Haram terrorist group in recent times has been characterized by series of abductions, killings of both civilians and military personnel, destructions and burning of houses, schools, health care centers, places of  worship and farms, these has no doubt plunged the country into a devastating state of 

insecurity. The basics of food, health, shelter, education and protection which constitute security to the human individual primarily, has therefore been threatened by the Boko Haram insurgency on human security in Nigeria. This paper therefore seeks to examine the effects of Boko Haram insurgency on human security in Nigeria using secondary sources as an instrument in writing this paper. Finding has it that insurgency has claimed a lot of lives, properties; compounded the food and nutrition insecurity situation in the country added with the spread of disease which are infectious; denied millions of people including youths and children access to education, increased the number of internally displaced people who are dire in need of shelter and has caused people to live in constant fear and anxiety. This paper concludes that Boko Haram insurgency has negative impact on human security and strongly recommend that counter- insurgency will be effective only when issues of poverty, corruption, unemployment, reformation of the judiciary and the security agencies and bad governance are effectively addressed and managed
