The Impact of Strikes On the Academic Performance of Students in Selected Secondary Schools of Kabarnet Division, Baringo District- Kenya

ABSTRACT

The study on the impact of strikes on the academic performance of students was carried out in the selected secondary schools in Kabarnet division, Baringo iistrict-Kenya. The objectives of the study were; to find out the effects of strikes and academic performance of secondary School students in selected schools of (abeyit secondary schools-Kibeyit division, to examine the causes of strikes in ,elected secondary schools of Kabarnet-Kabarnet division and to establish the ·emedies of strikes in selected secondary schools of Kabarnet-Kabarnet iivision. The researcher employed a random sampling technique to select the ;amples and a total of 60 respondents were used which represented the rest of :he respondents. Data collected was based on the objectives of the study. On the impact of strikes in academic performance in selected secondary schools in (abarnet division, the findings revealed that; closure of schools with 28.3%, 1igh depression and stress with 21.3%, decline in class performance with l3.3%, decline in the quality of education with 8.3%, and decline in class )articipation with 8.3%. On the causes of strikes in selected secondary schools n Kabarnet division, the study findings revealed that; expulsion of the ;tudents, with 25% corporal punishments with 35%%, poor-teacher-students- ·elations with 18.3%, drug abuse with 10%, and poor feeding with 15%. On the ;solutions to school strikes in selected schools in Kabarnet division, the findings ·evealed that; avoid students' expulsion with 16.6%, improve feeding with l.3%, improve the teacher-student relationship with 18.3%, avoid corporal Junishments with 33.3%, emphasize teacher ethics with 23.3%. ~ the data was collected using both qualitative and quantitative methods of data:collection. Conclusions were made in which the research concluded that strikes have been disastrous on both the students and the school administration as dramatic decline m students' performances has been witnessed. The researcher later made recommendations like arresting of ;tudents who spearhead strikes, enacting of laws on strikes, and scraping of :orporal punishments among others.
