ABSTRACT The study was to investigate the role of micro finance credit for womens empowerment in Nairobi district, Gikomba market. The researcher chose this study due to the multiple roles played by women; in addition women are engaged in subsistence activities that bring forth meagre returns and are limited by inadequate control over material and financial resources, access to adequate credit and appropriate markets for their goods and services. The researcher used both primary and secondary sources f data, however, the main instruments of data collection were interview schedule, a questionnaire and observation method. The study used fourty five (45) respondents out of the entire sample frame, fourty of whom were women entrepreneurs while five (5) were micro finance officers. The study established that women entrepreneurs were limited in the utilisation of credit due to their inadequate entrepreneurial skills. The major recommendation was that micro finance institutions should have "tailor made" policies and regulations which suit their goals in order to address the very poor entrepreneurs and the government should support the micro finance sector in order to realise the role of micro credit towards women empowerment.
