The Role of NGOs in Advocating the Rights of Women in Nigeria

  This study is concerned with the evaluation of the roles played by Non-governmental organizations in the advocacy for women human rights in Nigeria. The objective of the study includes identification of the specific objectives and programmes of the NGOs towards advocacy for women's human rights and the impacts of NGOs towards discrimnation against women and also the challenges faced by the NGOs in achieving their women's human rights advocacy. The data collection instrumenta include questionnaire and checklist. The population of the study was 230,640 women in women centres and six states were chosen each from the six geo-political zones of the country. Research questions were developed and answered respectively. The study revealed that NGOs offers assistance to foster women education and towards women health. The study also shows the major roles of the NGOs in advocating the rights of women in Nigeria and also the challenges faced by these NGOs. It is recommended that the NGOs should design programmes that would assist women and make them have impact in the society. Women NGOs are also recommended to restrict their attentions to the areas in which they have clear-cut knowledge and competence in order to curb out the problems of juvenile delinquencies, hawking, high rate of divorce cases, sexual harrassements,drug abuses, and problems of girl child education.
