The study sought to investigate the effectiveness of using base ten materials (abacus) to enhance primary four pupils' performance in the concept of place value. In order to achieve the purpose, the quasi experimental design was used. Stratified and simple random sampling procedures were used to select a sample of 30 pupils (15 for experimental and control groups respectively) from a population of 70 pupils. Achievement test on place value was used on the groups to gather data for the study. Means, standard deviations and independent t-test were used in the analysis. The findings of the study showed that base ten materials (abacus) was effective in enhancing pupils' performance and that there was no significance difference in the performance of male and female pupils in the experimental group in the concept of place value.
