ABSTRACT
TheissueofxenophobiaattacksinSouthAfricahasbecomeaproblematicphenomenoninthe
AfricancontinentwiththecasesofZambiaandSouthAfrica.Thisxenophobictendenceisbased
onprejudiceandhatreddirectedtowardsforeignnationalsspecificallyblackAfricanswhoare
deemedbythenativegroupsaspersistentthreatstotheirentitlementslikeemploymentsecurity,
accommodation,resourcedistributionandothervariousopportunitieswithinthepolitical,
economic,socio-culturalandtechnologicalpremisesjusttomentionthesefew.Assuch,the
purposeofthisresearchworkwastoestablishthebackgroundofthephenomenonofxenophobia
anditsrelatedviolenceintheSouthAfricancontext,whatrippleeffectsitsbringsaboutin
variouslevelsofthesocietyandhowitinturnaffectstheideaofAfrica'sregionalintegrationin
bi-lateralandmulti-lateralstateinteractionplatforms.Itwasalsodweltuponthatregional
integrationisafeasiblealternativetobringaboutthemuchneededdevelopmentinacollective
effortandoutcomebasis.Variousschoolsofthoughtsupportthisnotionastheygenerallyagree
thatAfricanstatesaregenerallyweakandvulnerablethereforetheyshouldachieveunityof
purposetoensureforcollectivedevelopmentaswellasestablishingsovereigntyandsecurity
from externalinterventionexercisesbysuperpowersintheinternationalarena.Various
conclusionshavebeenreachedfrominformationgatheredduringtheresearchastotheopinions,
viewsandcommentsfrom respondentsthatwereconsultedandfurtherrecommendationswere
providedastowhatmorethatcanbedonetomitigatetheproblemofxenophobicattackswhich
wouldconsequentlyensureforthesuccessfulrealisationofthevariouseffortstowardsregional
integrationontheAfricancontinen
