ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL POTENTIALS OF ENDOPHYTIC FUNGIFROM(Lippia adoensis Hoechst.Var. Koseret)LEAF AND SEED

Abstract:

Endophytic fungi represent a wide diversity of microbial adaptations that have evolved in special and unusual environments, making them a great source of study and research for new drugs for medical, industrial, and agriculture uses.The present study was undertaken to investigate antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of endophytic fungalextracts ofkoseret leaf and seeds.The leaf and seed samples collected from the home gardens were used for endophyte fungal extraction.Endophytes were isolated using Potato Dextrose Agar and the growth tip examined by macro and microscope following the standard procedures. The antimicrobial experiment was arranged in a completely randomized factorial design including four endophytic fungal extracts from leaf and seed samples of koseret at three concentration levels, a solvent (methanol), and four test pathogens in three replications. Antioxidant activities of the extract was assessed by 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Hydrogen peroxide whereas;antimicrobial activities were used disc diffusion and broth dilution methods. The significantlyhighest phenolic content (13. 48 gm GAE/g) and radical scavenging activity (54.74%), tested with DPPH displayed by Alternaria sp, whilst Aspergillus sp extract has been recorded as the least phenolic content (7.67mg GAE/g) as well as least radical scavenging activity (22.43%) with DPPH. The antibacterial activity in concentration(125mg/ml) of the crude extracts has been recorded the diameter zone of inhibition ranging from (14.47 to 21.50 mm)against both tested strains E.coli and S. aureusrespectively. In the same concentration (125mg/ml) of the extract has been presented the diameter zone of inhibition ranging from(16.07 to 25.60 mm) against tested fungal strains. The crude extracts endophytic fungal has been presented the strongest antibacterial activity with MIC (5.21mg/ml), and MBC (10.42mg/ml least value) against S. aureus recorded byAspergillus sp and strongest antifungal activity with MIC(2.21mg/ml), and MFC(10.42mg/ml)least value against both A. niger and A. versiclorshowed by Alternaria sp.The finding of the present study demonstratedthat the endophytes extract has indicated higher biological activitiesincluding antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials
