ABSTRACT

The study was on the “Assessment of traditional communication in community development of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The objective of this study were to ascertain if traditional forms of communications are still used in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, to identify the forms of traditional communication, to enhance development of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area; to identify the challenges of traditional forms of communication in community development. Research design used for this study was survey method. The population of the study according to 2016 projection consist of 249,100 residents of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select sample size of 350. Data collection was through questionnaire and was analyzed by the use of descriptive statistics. The findings of the study revealed that Mkpat Enin Local Government still make use of traditional forms of communication. The study also shows that traditional forms of communication encourages development especially in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. Recommendations of the study were that viable press should be established with the aim of integrating and mobilizing people for active participation in development programmes. Also education should be the major priority of government for Mkpat Enin residents especially development planners with the aim of training indigenous communications to operate both traditional and modern ways of communication which would allow for well-balanced system.
