ABSTRACT
The attachment report for Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in research department covers all the skills gained, practical duties carried out, challenges faced, recommendations and conclusion to be done in the course of the attachment period.
It also covers the brief description of KMFRI organization, its management structure, its roles as well as its various departments. Among its various activities include; marine animal research (mostly fish), observing fish habitation and fish feeding, discovering fish diseases and their control, preservation of various fish species, caring out marine plant research for marine herbarium, aquarium activities and sensitizing the community on proper fishing activities and gear selection.
Marine research aids attaches to gain knowledge on the multiplication, evolution and factors affecting the survival of aquatic life. Through this aim, I gained knowledge that the distribution and biodiversity of aquatic animals is due to a variety of factors both biological, chemical and physical.
The KMFRI biology lab for preservation of fish species helps the researchers to monitor and distinguish the rate at which evolution is taking place. It also offers constant evidence of aquatic organisms that got extinct.
Aquarium, fish feeding and fish feed formulation equipped me with great knowledge of rearing fish.in addition to that microbiology and chemistry laboratory practices equipped me with unlimited research knowledge in analyzing samples for nutrient availability and dissolved oxygen in the aquatic ecology.
Fishing communities also benefits from this institution through the great education that it offers. They are sensitized on the types of gears to use and areas to use them through the information submitted to the Fisheries who makes the policies when it comes to gears used in the aquatic ecosystem. The institution also directs on the specific periods that fishing should be done by considering the scientific research information gained on the breeding periods and sites of different fish species in the lake.
