The study assessed factors determining consumers’ preference for indigenous and exotic strains of chickens. Questionnaire was administered to 150 respondents in Abeokuta Metropolis. The result showed that 29.65% of the respondents made their preference for indigenous chicken strain based on multiple choices of husbandry practices (feeding, health management, and housing). Preference for indigenous strains based on health grounds was 13.60%, while 10.80% had their preference based on housing systems of management. There was no significant relationship between consumer attributes: age {0.53 (p=0.819)}, sex {2.88 (p=0.142)}, marital status {1.90 (p=0.387)}, family size {2.12 (p=0.515)}, religion {4.82 (p=310)}, occupation {4.82 (p=0.208)}, monthly income {2.41 (p>0.05)}, educational status {2.76 (p=0.558)} and preference for chicken meat. Likewise, budgeting {4.52 (p>0.05) for chicken meat in a week, whether the family size is large or not, was not significant. Large number of consumers made their choices of indigenous chicken because of its very low susceptibility to diseases and the use of organic systems of rearing which eliminates the risk of transfer of disease pathogens and inorganic materials used in production, from the chicken meat to man. There is growing importance and need for improved biodiversity conservation for the genetic resources of the indigenous strains of chicken.
