ABSTRACT

The project is on the tDevelopment of Automobile Br&e

Linings using materials and methods. Five dis= brake linings

of the geometrical specification of Peugeot 504 series were

produced using the available equipment at the Mechanical

Engineering Department of the University of Nigeria, Nsuklira,

The friction pads were made of varying proportions of palm

kernel shell as the base friction material, rubber latex, rubber

dust, sulphur, clay, brass chips and Epoxy Resins.

Laboratory tests were carried out to estimate the s t a t i c

and dynamic coefficients of f r i d i o n , the variation of friction

coefficient with pressure, the moisture sensitivity, and the

hardness. The results showed average st-tic coef f icient5 of

0.497, 0.435, 0.444, 0.426 and 0,411 for specimens 1, 2, 4(a),

4(b), and for a commercial lining respectively. The average

t starting' dynamic coefficients 0,456, 0.313, 0.377, 0.388 and

*

0.360 for specimens 1, 2, 4(a), 4(b) and the Ferodo pad resptively.

The variation of friction coefficients wFth pressure

was more noticeable for specimens 1, 2, and 4(a) while specimens

4(b) and the Ferodo lining showed a fairly constant coefficknt

with increase in presswe. The friction coefficient variations

between w e t and dry conditions were 0.3 to 0.6, 0-3 t o 0.5, 0.3 t o

0.5, 0.3 to 0.44 and 0.32 to 0.42 for specimens 1, 2, 4(a), 4(b),
