The influence of personality, emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction on domestic violence among couples

This study investigated influence of personality, emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction on domestic violence among couples. It adopted expost facto design. The independent variables are Personality, emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction while dependent variable is domestic violence. The study was conducted in Ibadan North local government. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 259 participants consisting of 112 males and 138 females who responded to questionnaire-Big Five Personality Inventory of Rammstedt and John(2007), Trait Emotional Intelligence of Petrides and Furnham(2006), Locke-Wallace(1959)’s Marital Adjustment Test and HITS of Kevin e tal. (1998). Mean scores, frequencies, percentages, Pearson's correlation and regression was used for analysis. The results disclosed that there was positive relationship between domestic violence, personality

[r = .24, p < .01], emotional intelligence [r = .17, p < .01] and marital satisfaction

[r = .26, p < .01]. Also, the result shows that personality significantly predicted domestic violence [t = 2.53, p < .05, β = .22].  Agreeableness personality significantly predicted domestic violence. Emotional intelligence does not significantly predict domestic violence

[t = .62 p > .05, β = .05]. Also, marital satisfaction significantly predict domestic violence

[t = 1.91, p < .05, β = .17]. There is significant difference of domestic violence in marital status [F = 2.80, p < .05] and income of the couples [F = 4.91, p < .01]. The implication of these findings in managing domestic violence and adding values to marital and family counseling was discussed.
