Abstract

The effect of aqueous extract of Moringa oleifera seed on serum cortisol and body weights was investigated in 24 adult Wistar rats for 21 days. Dried Moringa oleifera seeds were powdered by an electric blender. With the aid of an oven regulated at 400C and water, the Moringa oleifera seed extract was produced. The extract was dissolved in 5% Tween 80 solution to produce aqueous extract with concentration of 200mg/ml. The rats with a mean body weight of 144±43.1g were divided into four groups A-D and distilled water, 250, 500 and 1000mg/Kg body weight of the extract were orally administered respectively once daily at 8.00am for 21 days. The serum cortisol level decreased in a dose dependent manner (p0.05). However, there was weight gain in all the groups but the weight gain in the control group exceeded that of the test groups and there was a decrease in weight gain at the end of the experiment especially in group D.
