Effects of Food Price Changes on Households' Food Consumption in Ungogo LGA, Kano State, Nigeria

Abstract

Domestic economic policies in Nigeria have been attributed to the recent skyrockets in food prices in the country.  This paper examines the effects of food price changes on household’s consumption in Ungogo Local Government Area, Kano State. The study uses primary data sourced from administering questionnaires to one hundred households in the study area using simple random sampling technique. The data was analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings of the paper reveal that majority of the households are headed are by male with high level of education up to tertiary level.   The results further reveal that, the recent food price skyrockets has reduced the quality and quantity of food consumes by households in the study area. The paper therefore recommends provision of subsidy on agricultural inputs especially to the farmers of food crops so as to accelerate food production the in the country.
