Entrepreneurship as a mechanism for addressing youth unemployment in Botswana: A reality or idealism

Increasing unemployment in most of the developing countries has become main hindrance behind decreasing livelihood standards and poverty. Worldwide, within the framework of potential efforts and strategies to boost employment and job creation for young people, literature shows that entrepreneurship is increasingly accepted as an important means and a valuable additional strategy to create jobs and improve livelihoods and economic independence of young people. With an unemployment rate of 20% among youth in Botswana, entrepreneurship should be evolved to act as an engine of self-employment. It is in this regard that, this paper seeks to determine whether entrepreneurship development can address youth unemployment in Botswana or it is just idealism. Having utilized the primary and secondary source of data generation, this paper made several findings and recommendations among which that government should make entrepreneurship sellable to the youth by inculcating it into the educational curriculum at every strata of the educational sector. To educate the youth more on the importance, essence and need for entrepreneurship development especially on a practical basis and then find a means of supporting these entrepreneurial projects cutting across all spheres of the country, and also create enabling environment for entrepreneurship to thrive.
