ABSTRACT

This study seeks to identify and to analyse some of the difficulties that students of French in Navrongo Senior High School face in the area of pronunciation with the sounds [ʃ] and [ʒ] at the centre attention. Research data was collected through questionnaire and test for the learners of French and an interview for the teachers of French. The analysis of the data revealed that learners face difficulties pronouncing the sounds [ʃ] and [ʒ] because of transfer difficulties from their mother tongue (kasem) and English to French. The results also show that teachers pay less attention to the teaching of pronunciation due to lack of text books and other logistics to facilitate the teaching and learning of French. The study however proposed measures that will help to correct the difficulties that learners face. Some of these measures include the use of minimal pairs, the supply of French text books to all schools among others. These measures, when put in place, will help improve the teaching and learning of pronunciation in French
