A key challenge towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in healthcare in Kenya is the low number of a properly trained and motivated health workforce. The ratio of health worker to population served remains disappointingly low, while at the same time there remains a huge challenge of retaining the limited number of health workers at the hospitals. This is a challenge that afflicts both the public and private hospitals in Kenya as many health workers leave their organizations to seek work elsewhere. Private hospitals are an integral pillar of the Kenyan health system and so the stakeholders need to develop employee retention strategies that will enable them to hold on to their health workers in this dynamic healthcare industry. This research aimed to extensively examine the factors that influence employee retention at a large private hospital in Kenya, with a case for M.P. Shah Hospital. The study explored the extent to which the known factors of employee motivation, work environment and training and development influenced employee retention at M.P. Shah Hospital.
