Farmers’attitude Towards Warehouse Receipt System In Newala District

ABSTRACT This study aimed at assessingfarmers’ attitude towards warehouse receipt system in NewalaDistrict. The study sought to achieve the following specific objectives. Firstly, to describe the warehouse receipt system that operates for small holder farmers in Newala. Secondly, to determineknowledge of the farmers on warehouse receipt system, thirdly, to determine the attitude of farmers towards the operations of the warehouse receipts system and lastly, to determine the contribution of cashew nuts to farmers livelihood. A cross sectional research design was adopted;a sample size of 150 respondents was obtained through multi stage sampling which involved simple random and purposive sampling techniques. In order to measure individual farmer’s knowledge and attitude on Warehouse Receipt System knowledge index and attitude index were used for data analysis. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 16.0 and Binary Logistic Regression Model were used to analyze data related to descriptive and inferential statistics. Using descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, minimum and maximum value of individual variable), the first specific objective of this study was analyzed using SPSS. The Inferential statistics applied the binary logistic regression model to determine the contribution of cashew nuts towards farmer’s livelihood. The findings of the study show that farm size and education level (P=0.000) were the most significant predictors of improvement of farmers’ livelihood. The coefficient was positive (1.526 and 1.29) in the sense that farmers who have big farms and education were likely to have good quality houses. Likewise, the findings of the study show that farmers have low knowledge level and negative attitude towards warehouse receipt system.
