Impacts Of Domestic Violence On The Welfare Of Children A Case Study Of Wakiso Town Council

 

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out in Wakiso district within Wakiso Town

council. It was carried out on the effects of domestic violence on child

welfare. Its objectives were to find out the causes of domestic violence in

the area, the effects of domestic violence on child welfare and family

stability as well as the measures that could be put in place to solve the

problem of domestic violence.

The study used a descriptive research design to describe issues relating

to domestic violence and child welfare, the study population included the

local people, the human rights organizations that protect the rights of

children and the local authorities in the area. Simple random sampling

and purposive sampling procedures were used in the study to obtain a

sample of 80 respondents from the study population. Data was collected

from both primary and secondary sources using key informant interviews

and interview guides and Data was analyzed qualitatively in themes that

reflect the study objectives.

The study found out domestic violence was being caused by

drunkardness, poverty, adultery and bad behaviours of children. This

domestic violence resulted into divorces, death of children, street

children and lack of education among children. This problem of domestic

violence was being solved through laws, sensitization of communities,

establishment of children’s homes and punishing of the people who

promote domestic violence.

Therefore the study recommended that the government and other

stakeholders should step up their efforts to educate the communities on

how to respect the rights of each others in order to have stable homes

that give children better growing opportunities.
