PROLIFERATION OF CHURCHES IN NIGERIA AND THE RISE IN MORALDECADENCE IN OUR SOCIETY. A STUDY OF AMAC, ABUJA.
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDYThe issue of moral decadence in our society is a thing that needs to be looked into, manythings have gone wrong since most people do not think it upright in action at some circumstance. The continuing degeneration of personal virtue among the societies seems to be emerging as analarming trend in recent time. Until recent years, churches have been performing their originalroles in maintaining morality. Though many outside the church continued to mount politicalpressure to churches away from a value oriented life. This poses questions as to how members ofour society then learn morality? The emergence of new churches and other Christian movement is unprecedented. As Iwrite this, Nigeria is being listed as the country with the highest members of churches in Africa. It is obvious that the contemporary Nigerian church is engulfed by materialism prevalent in thesociety, rather than find peace and solace in the Christian hope of eternal life, signs of totalsubmission to capitalist tendencies. Today, many  of our church leaders consciously measuresuccess in life in terms of wealth, prestige and power. No wonder, in some churches, issues thatconcern   the   rich   receive   more   attention   by   pastors   while   that   of   the   poor   are   handleduninterested. In being realistic, we can testify that the sudden spring of churches at every cornerof our land with different names attached to them and are being owned and managed by self-called, trained and commissioned pastors and ministers who never sat down one day to be trained1
