ABSRTACT
In an empirical investigation into the newspaper reportage of probe of top officials of the Goodluck Jonathan administration with special reference of punch and guardian newspapers, through the used of five units of analysis (including editorials, features, letters to the editor, opinion articles and press interviews). Furthermore, the study employed the used of synthesis of primary and secondary sources to include: series of textbooks, research project works, magazines and newspapers. Findings revealed that the media promote national interests and certain behaviours especially in critical or emergency situations and during times of national crises or misappropriation of funds. Findings also showed that the government and the elite class got less criticism in newspaper editorial reactions than praises and political inspiration. The study concluded that the newspapers did not fully utilize the potency of editorials to probe the top officials during the Jonathan administration. The study recommended that more critical editorials be done by newspapers on the shortcomings of the government and the elite class in order to foster national interest and curtail corruption.
