Prevalence of Respiratory Symptoms Among A Population Exposed to Cement Dust in Rowant, Malaysia

Air pollution continues to receive a great deal of interest worldwide due to its negative impact on human health and welfare. The cement industry is a significant source of environmental pollution with detrimental effects on plants, animals and humans. The hazard of cement production on the environment are the broadcast of dust and gases. This study was carried out to determine the health effects that cement factory has impacted on a community. A total of 203 respondents were interviewedin two communities;  one exposed and one unexposed community with a modified respiratory symptom questionnaire. Chi square test and multiple logistic regression were used  to analyse the data obtained. The study population showed higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms compare to control population. The study suggested that people living around cement factories are more likely to develop respiratory symptoms than control population.
