Abstract:

This study set out to study the relationship between alcohol use and depression as a general objective among youths in Kayole and Mihang'o, in Embakasi Nairobi County, Kenya, The study used descriptive and correlational research design targeting youths both female and male, aged 18 to 35 years who had current or previously used alcohol. Individuals who were above the age of 35 years or below 18 years did not qualify to participate in the study. A sample of 179 respondents obtained by random sampling technique was utilized in the study. Data were collected by filling in socio demographic questionnaire. BDI-11 and AUDIT and analyzed using SPSS version 24. Data analysis was done using inferential statistics which included correlational and regression analyses and ANOVA. Results of the study showed that 17.9% of the participants have used alcohol; this was the prevalence rate reported and 72% of all respondents have witnessed a Mend drink heavily or were pan of a group where alcohol was consumed. A negative and insignificant relationship between gender and alcohol use (r=-.042, p >0.575) was reported, while the relationship between depression and alcohol use was positive and significant (r=-0.280**, p
