Religion and Covid-19 in Nigeria: A Real Journey into New Religious Experience and Expression

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is a recently discovered pneumonia infection discovered in Wuhan, China, lately in December, 2019. The infection spread quickly to other parts of the world in such a way that no country seems to be left out. Consequence to these, the World Health Organization (WHO) declares it a pandemic infection that calls for International concern. Government at various levy find means of controlling its spread though no certified medicine and vaccine for now but a highly and progressive feat is attained as there are more than 90% success in vaccine research by many academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies in their efforts towards finding a lasting solution. At the peak of the pandemic, religious centers and activities are on hold following government regulation. This work however, aims at interrogating how the pandemic has change the religious atmosphere in the country. The study adopts expository, observation and descriptive methodologies to achieve its aims. The study finds out among other things that many Nigerians has re-evaluate their religious experience and expression as they have come to understanding that they can assess their God anywhere and at any time consequently, they can do without religious gathering and others during the hit, device other means of congregating using Information Communication Technology devices which made them to congregate even when they are in the comfort of their room. Hence, the study concludes that, Covid-19 serves as eyes opener to many religious adherent. Some were enlightened the more about the practice of the faith and others sees opportunities to conquer physical distancing using technology.
