Self Esteem and Students Academic Achievement in Selected Secondary Schools in Kisumu District

ABSTRACT

The study set out to investigate the relationship between programmed self-esteem and students' academic performance in Kisumu District, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the level of self-esteem among the learners, the level of academic performance and finally the relationship between self-esteem and academic performance in Kisumu District. The study used a descriptive correlative survey research design. The sample size consisted of 204 students. The methods of data collection were self-administered questionnaires. The findings revealed that self-esteem has a significant effect on students' achievement. The study recommended that the teachers can put all measures in place to improve learners’ self-esteem. More teachers should be trained and sensitized on aspects that can help them improve the learners’ self-esteem. Parents should be sensitized on the importance of participating in overseeing their children’s self-esteem.
