THE EFFECTS OF OCCUPATIONAL STRESS IN THE BUSINESS ORGANIZATIONS. A CASE STUDY OF KENYA PORTS AUTHORITY MOMBASA, KENYA.

ABSTRACT

The management of occupational stress in organizations has continued to raise more

concerns than ever before due to increased legislation and employee demands and

awareness. Essentially this has put the employers in a situation mandatory for the

organization to provide better services and management to the employees including the

management of stress within the workplace. The backbone of this research is the effects

of the management of this occupational stress specifically in the business industry such as

Kenya Ports Authority in Mombasa.

The first chapter introduces the study through background information, statement of the

problem as well as the objectives of the study including the main causes of stress, the

effects of such stress and how to effectively manage it. The questions that will guide the

study are also given, the significance of the study, the scope as well as the anticipated

limitations and ways of mitigating them are also given. Literature review is based on the

management of occupational stress in the context of the causes, conunon symptoms,

major effects and the major strategies of coping with stress and follows a conceptual

framework to achieve the objectives of the study as well as answering the research

questions.

The study will employ descriptive design while sampling will be by systematic random

sampling to obtain a 50% sample from a target population of I 06. Primary data will be

obtained using a questionnaire with mainly closed ended questions while secondary data

will be sourced from libraries and internet. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze

the data as well as the statistical packages and presented using percentages, tables and

charts.
