The Influence Of Social Media On Sexual Behaviors Among Students Of Cape Coast Technical University

Introduction: Social media are the collection of online communications channels dedicated to community- based input, interactions, content sharing and collaboration across people Elephant, (2011). Social media has become a routine way of life for most people. Students search for all kind of means to solve sexual challenges that they face. Most of them get their source of information through social media. Studies have shown that social media have an influence on sexual behaviors of young people. However, it remains unclear how social media can influence sexual behaviors of young adults in Ghana. This study sought to assess the influence social media have on sexual behaviors of students.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study design was used in this study. Quantitative methods were used in the collection of data. The population of interest was students in the Cape Coast Technical University. A multistage sampling technique was used to sample 311 students from the Cape Coast Technical University. Descriptive analysis was done using tables. A bivariate analysis was done using the chi square technique, while a multiple logistic regression technique was performed to examine the factors that may be associated with sexual behaviors.

Results: The study showed that about 78.5% of students use social media. That includes students who use both Facebook and Whatsapp. About 73.6% of students engage in two ways sexting, which include both sending and receiving of sexual messages. The study also showed that 32.5% of students had sex with people they met on social media.

Conclusion: Results from the study indicate that social media have an influence on students engaging in multiple sexual partnerships. Students who use social media are more likely to engage in multiple sexual partner relationship compared to students who do not use social media.
